Medicine and healthcare

Life in Slovenia
When you’re employed or#nbsp;start a#nbsp;business, a#nbsp;minimum package of#nbsp;MHI becomes available. You don’t have to#nbsp;pay for it#nbsp;separately#nbsp;— deductions to#nbsp;social funds from the salary cover its cost. You can also get an#nbsp;MHI policy for non-working family members without additional contributions.
The MHI policy covers the cost of#nbsp;appointments with most doctors, emergency care and support for pregnancy and childbirth, but you will have to#nbsp;pay extra for prescriptions for medicines and the medicines#nbsp;— this amount can reach several hundred euros.
For an#nbsp;additional fee, you can get a#nbsp;VHI policy from any insurance company. It#nbsp;operates on#nbsp;a#nbsp;monthly subscription system and covers all insured events, including treatment of#nbsp;chronic diseases and regular check-ups.
There is#nbsp;no#nbsp;need to#nbsp;issue a#nbsp;VHI policy for children under 18−26 years of#nbsp;age, if#nbsp;they are students. The special VHI tariff for this category of#nbsp;citizens already includes additional services.

Obtaining a#nbsp;VHI policy in#nbsp;Slovenia:

  • Go#nbsp;to#nbsp;the insurance company with your passport and residence permit card.
  • Fill in#nbsp;an#nbsp;application for a#nbsp;policy.
  • Conclude a#nbsp;contract for services and pay for the policy.
  • Receive the policy and check the correctness of#nbsp;your personal data.
When you receive your health insurance card#nbsp;— ZZZS, you can register with a#nbsp;general practitioner, gynecologist (for women), dentist, pediatrician (for children) at#nbsp;any polyclinic. You can choose doctors close to#nbsp;your home or#nbsp;doctors with good recommendations.
In#nbsp;Slovenia, if#nbsp;you are ill, you can make an#nbsp;appointment only with a#nbsp;general practitioner, gynecologist or#nbsp;dentist. You cannot visit other doctors without the appointment issued by#nbsp;the general practitioner. Sometimes a#nbsp;highly specialized doctor has a#nbsp;busy schedule, then you have to#nbsp;wait longer. So, it’s better to#nbsp;make an#nbsp;appointment with a#nbsp;general practitioner right away rather than waiting until you feel worse.
Emergency medical care is#nbsp;provided immediately. But be#nbsp;careful because you will be#nbsp;fined for a#nbsp;call without any reason. The emergency phone number in#nbsp;Slovenia is#nbsp;112.

Pharmacies in#nbsp;Slovenia

In#nbsp;Slovenia, there are public and private pharmacies. They do#nbsp;not differ much in#nbsp;price, but private pharmacies usually have a#nbsp;consulting physician. He#nbsp;can consult you, choose a#nbsp;medicine for you and even write a#nbsp;prescription. Medicines are not dispensed i#nbsp;without a#nbsp;prescription in#nbsp;Slovenia. Therefore, private pharmacies are perfect for sick people who can’t visit the doctor immediately.
