Guide: the first days in Slovenia

Life in Slovenia
This article is#nbsp;a#nbsp;guide to#nbsp;what you need to#nbsp;do#nbsp;in the first few days after moving in.

Search for housing and registration at#nbsp;the place of#nbsp;residence

You must obtain temporary registration within 8 days of#nbsp;your arrival in#nbsp;Slovenia. To#nbsp;be#nbsp;on time, it#nbsp;is#nbsp;better to#nbsp;find accommodation in#nbsp;advance using real estate search websites. To#nbsp;apply for registration at#nbsp;Upravna enota, you must submit a#nbsp;rent agreement and personal documents.

Obtaining TIN

A#nbsp;personal tax number (davčna številka) is#nbsp;an#nbsp;important document in#nbsp;Slovenia. It#nbsp;is#nbsp;required not only for entering into any type of#nbsp;contract or#nbsp;tax deduction, but even for getting a#nbsp;local SIM card.
The tax number is#nbsp;obtained at#nbsp;the office of#nbsp;the Tax Administration of#nbsp;the Republic of#nbsp;Slovenia (FURS#nbsp;— Finančni urad Republike Slovenije).
For this purpose you need:
  • Filled application form.
  • Copy of#nbsp;the passport.
  • TIN number in#nbsp;your home country.

Registration in#nbsp;social insurance funds

This is#nbsp;a#nbsp;mandatory procedure for all citizens. Employment history is#nbsp;counted from the date of#nbsp;registration in#nbsp;the social insurance system. If#nbsp;you miss this stage, you can’t get a#nbsp;paycheck and make deductions to#nbsp;the funds.

Medical insurance

When you are employed or#nbsp;start a#nbsp;business, the minimum package of#nbsp;MHI becomes available. It#nbsp;includes free appointments with most doctors, but you will have to#nbsp;pay extra for prescriptions for medicines and medical products#nbsp;— this amount can reach several hundred euros.
You can get a#nbsp;VHI policy from any insurance company. It#nbsp;operates on#nbsp;a#nbsp;monthly subscription system and covers all insured events, including treatment of#nbsp;chronic diseases and regular check-ups.

Registration in#nbsp;a#nbsp;healthcare facility

When you receive a#nbsp;health insurance card#nbsp;— ZZZS, you can register with a#nbsp;general practitioner, gynecologist (for women), dentist, pediatrician (for children) at#nbsp;any polyclinic. You can choose doctors close to#nbsp;your home or#nbsp;based on#nbsp;recommendations.
The health care system in#nbsp;Slovenia is#nbsp;organized in#nbsp;such a#nbsp;way that in#nbsp;case of#nbsp;illness you can make an#nbsp;appointment only with a#nbsp;general practitioner, gynecologist and dentist. You cannot simply get to#nbsp;other doctors#nbsp;— referrals to#nbsp;them are issued by#nbsp;the general practitioner. Sometimes a#nbsp;highly specialized doctor has a#nbsp;busy schedule#nbsp;— then you have to#nbsp;wait longer for an#nbsp;appointment. So, you should make an#nbsp;appointment with a#nbsp;general practitioner right away rather than waiting until you feel worse.

After 6 months: tax residency application

You can become a#nbsp;tax resident of#nbsp;Slovenia if#nbsp;you live in#nbsp;Slovenia for more than 183 calendar days per year. There is#nbsp;a#nbsp;reduced tax rate for residents and a#nbsp;tax deduction is#nbsp;available.
Submit the documents on#nbsp;the tax residency application in#nbsp;Slovenia to#nbsp;the bank, then the account status will be#nbsp;changed from non-resident to#nbsp;resident. Often the maintenance of#nbsp;resident bank accounts is#nbsp;cheaper and additional options are available.
