Medicine and healthcare

Life in Slovenia
When you’re employed or start a business, a minimum package of MHI becomes available. You don’t have to pay for it separately — deductions to social funds from the salary cover its cost. You can also get an MHI policy for non-working family members without additional contributions.
The MHI policy covers the cost of appointments with most doctors, emergency care and support for pregnancy and childbirth, but you will have to pay extra for prescriptions for medicines and the medicines — this amount can reach several hundred euros.
For an additional fee, you can get a VHI policy from any insurance company. It operates on a monthly subscription system and covers all insured events, including treatment of chronic diseases and regular check-ups.
There is no need to issue a VHI policy for children under 18−26 years of age, if they are students. The special VHI tariff for this category of citizens already includes additional services.

Obtaining a VHI policy in Slovenia:

  • Go to the insurance company with your passport and residence permit card.
  • Fill in an application for a policy.
  • Conclude a contract for services and pay for the policy.
  • Receive the policy and check the correctness of your personal data.
When you receive your health insurance card — ZZZS, you can register with a general practitioner, gynecologist (for women), dentist, pediatrician (for children) at any polyclinic. You can choose doctors close to your home or doctors with good recommendations.
In Slovenia, if you are ill, you can make an appointment only with a general practitioner, gynecologist or dentist. You cannot visit other doctors without the appointment issued by the general practitioner. Sometimes a highly specialized doctor has a busy schedule, then you have to wait longer. So, it’s better to make an appointment with a general practitioner right away rather than waiting until you feel worse.
Emergency medical care is provided immediately. But be careful because you will be fined for a call without any reason. The emergency phone number in Slovenia is 112.

Pharmacies in Slovenia

In Slovenia, there are public and private pharmacies. They do not differ much in price, but private pharmacies usually have a consulting physician. He can consult you, choose a medicine for you and even write a prescription. Medicines are not dispensed i without a prescription in Slovenia. Therefore, private pharmacies are perfect for sick people who can’t visit the doctor immediately.
