Slovenia has a temperate continental climate. It varies greatly in different regions: the climate is particularly different on the coast, in the mountains and the center of the country. It is influenced by the proximity of the Adriatic Sea and the mountains, which shield the country from cold northern winds.
Locals say that the climate in Slovenia is one of the mildest in Europe. There are no sharp temperature and pressure changes, winters and summers are rather warm, without frosts and exhausting heat.
Winters in Slovenia are quite mild. In the mountains the average temperature in January is about -6°C, and on the coast it is about 5 °C. Spring and fall in Slovenia can be changeable with occasional rain. The average temperature in July and August is 25 °C.
In the mountains, the climate is harsher and drier. In the south of Slovenia, the weather can be windy and dry. In summer in mountainous areas, rain or thunderstorms can happen during the day, at night it’s cold and foggy, especially in remote mountain gorges. The average summer temperature is around 20−23°C during the day, dropping to 10 °C at night.
The climate in Slovenia is favorable for outdoor activities and tourism in any season. Tourists and locals can enjoy ski resorts in winter, mountain trekking in spring and fall, surfing and diving in summer.
