This article is a guide to what you need to do in the first few days after moving in.
Search for housing and registration at the place of residence
You must obtain temporary registration within 8 days of your arrival in Slovenia. To be on time, it is better to find accommodation in advance using real estate search websites. To apply for registration at Upravna enota, you must submit a rent agreement and personal documents.
Obtaining TIN
A personal tax number (davčna številka) is an important document in Slovenia. It is required not only for entering into any type of contract or tax deduction, but even for getting a local SIM card.
The tax number is obtained at the office of the Tax Administration of the Republic of Slovenia (FURS — Finančni urad Republike Slovenije).
For this purpose you need:
- Filled application form.
- Copy of the passport.
- TIN number in your home country.
Registration in social insurance funds
This is a mandatory procedure for all citizens. Employment history is counted from the date of registration in the social insurance system. If you miss this stage, you can’t get a paycheck and make deductions to the funds.
Medical insurance
When you are employed or start a business, the minimum package of MHI becomes available. It includes free appointments with most doctors, but you will have to pay extra for prescriptions for medicines and medical products — this amount can reach several hundred euros.
You can get a VHI policy from any insurance company. It operates on a monthly subscription system and covers all insured events, including treatment of chronic diseases and regular check-ups.
Registration in a healthcare facility
When you receive a health insurance card — ZZZS, you can register with a general practitioner, gynecologist (for women), dentist, pediatrician (for children) at any polyclinic. You can choose doctors close to your home or based on recommendations.
The health care system in Slovenia is organized in such a way that in case of illness you can make an appointment only with a general practitioner, gynecologist and dentist. You cannot simply get to other doctors — referrals to them are issued by the general practitioner. Sometimes a highly specialized doctor has a busy schedule — then you have to wait longer for an appointment. So, you should make an appointment with a general practitioner right away rather than waiting until you feel worse.
After 6 months: tax residency application
You can become a tax resident of Slovenia if you live in Slovenia for more than 183 calendar days per year. There is a reduced tax rate for residents and a tax deduction is available.
Submit the documents on the tax residency application in Slovenia to the bank, then the account status will be changed from non-resident to resident. Often the maintenance of resident bank accounts is cheaper and additional options are available.
